With Your Help, We’ll Free Chantal

Cosmopolitan Magazine

-Our article about Chantal McCorkle (September) – the British woman who we believe has been the victim of a miscarriage of justice in Florida – prompted a phenomenal response.  Many of you were so moved by her story you wrote to her in jail.  Chantal has asked us to pass on this message…

Dear Cosmo,

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for publicizing my plight. I have received so many lovely cards and letters full of love, support and encouragement from Britain.  Reading them, I am brought to tears.  Knowing people care, want to help me and truly believe in me, is such a wonderful feeling.  I want to personally respond to each and every one of your readers, thanking them.  It may take a while, as I am able to buy only so many envelopes and stamps per week (jail policy), but I will get it done.

My dream is to return to England and be reunited with my family.  I miss them so much and it gets lonely, but I also need to be strong for them, as they too are going through so much pain and just want me home.  There’s a quote I like: "The rainbow follows the storm."  So, I am patiently awaiting my rainbow.

Thank you for truly caring and helping me reach out beyond these four walls.  I feel I have something to live for and can look forward to having a family of my own.

And, of the many readers’ letters…

This is the third letter I have written today.  The first was to Chantal McCorkle, the second was to Tony Blair.  I have read Cosmo for a few years, but never have I felt such an urge to get up and do something. Your feature really touched me.

I have just read about Chantal McCorkle and I’ve written to both Tony Blair and Chantal. I have never written to a stranger before, let alone a PM – but then, I’ve never been so moved by a story before. It is hard to believe someone could be locked up for this ‘crime’; well done for taking up the fight.

After reading about Chantal, I had no hesitation in writing to Tony Blair and then Chantal herself.  I cannot believe the conditions in which she is being kept.  We all have to help her, so if there are any readers who have not already written to Tony Blair – or even better, Bill Clinton – then please do it now.
