I recently saw the Trisha program which discussed Chantal's case and I have to say I was amazed that her sentence was so harsh when compared to some other crimes.  How can this be just? That's easy, it isn't. It's another example of how mandatory sentencing in the US is not working. The idea of a justice system is that every case is treated individually and that the sentence should fit the crime. In this case the sentence does not fit the crime.

It's so easy to be caught up in the emotional aspect and I do, of course, sympathize with Chantal and her family but this sentence is so fundamentally wrong that even without the emotional aspect anyone can see things need to change. It also makes me think about the hundreds of other people who must be in a similar position.

I'm going to tell everyone and anyone who will listen about this case. It would be easy to say, "We will free her," but I can't promise that, but I can promise we will try.
